A house built from art
Fifteen years. Fourteen rooms. One complete work of art. The home and life's work of Afewerk Tekle in Addis Ababa.
Villa Alpha is not a house that contains art. It is art that became a house. Afewerk Tekle began its construction in 1959 in the Tor-Hailoch neighbourhood of Addis Ababa and continued to work on it for fifteen years. Every surface was painted, carved, designed, or chosen by the artist himself.
The rooms of Villa Alpha are rooms in an autobiography. To move through the house is to move through a mind — its devotion, its pleasure, its scholarship, its ambition. It is one of the great private artistic environments of the twentieth century.
